The last great Republican President, Theodore Roosevelt stuck his walking stick up the hornet's nest of financial tycoons and stirred up the monopoly barons of the 1900's. Promising to be a one - term president, he was followed by President Taft in 1908. Unhappy with Taft, Roosevelt ran against Taft's re-election and lost that primary. Roosevelt then formed the independent Bull Moose Party and ran as the third party candidate in 1912. Roosevelt understood that growing economic disparity between the working class and the corporate upper class could not sustain a fair capitalist system.
